About This Item
New York: Whittlesey House, 1945. First edition. Her first book for children, a story revolving around the donkey ridden by Christ into the city of Jerusalem. Illustrations in the text and on the dust jacket by Valenti Angelo, who began his career illustrating for Grabhorn Press. Although not indicated as such in the book, presume this copy was Angelo's as there is a TYPED LETTER SIGNED BY PRICE TO ANGELO laid in. Single-page, dated April 5, 1945, thanking him for his illustrations, "...I want to tell you how utterly charming your drawings are and how they have captured the whole mood of the story with an atmosphere of grace and springtime....They should make the little donkey's journey into book-land a very pleasant one indeed." In original mailing envelope with dab of gold paint on front. The book is aged a bit but still very good to near fine with offset to front endpaper, apparently from envelope. In bright, good dust jacket with edge chipping not affecting any lettering. Scarce in any dust jacket.
