New York: Published under the direction of the American Historical Company, 1939. First edition thus. Quarto (11" x 8"), 523 pages, with illustrations from portraits. Publisher's three-quarter crushed black morocco & blue cloth, the spine in five compartments separated by raised bands, lettered or decorated in gilt in four compartments. Text in two columns. Top edge gilt.
Edges & joints moderately rubbed, cloth with a few light scratches, corners a bit bumped, gift inscription at front free endpaper, sporadic minor foxing, otherwise Very Good.
An attractive leather binding housing concise biographies & portrait illustrations of prominent Americans. Beginning in 1931, the American Historical Company published similar volumes of this title over several years, each profiling different persons.
