About This Item

Country Life Ltd, London, 1965. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good Condition/Good. Illustrator: Photographic. 1.0 kg; 164 pages, in original red cloth covered boards, with colour illustrated dustjacket. The top and bottom edges of the binding have flecked slightly, and be previous owner's name is on the title page. the price clipped dustjacket is very slightly rubbed at the bottom tips of the fold overs, and at the top and bottom of the spine section. The protective clear coating has started to lift at the left-hand side of the front panel over the spine gutter. This is the 1st book devoted exclusively to English looking-glasses -- nowadays called mirrors -- and it deals with the subject between the 1617 1820. The 1st section of the book deals with the frames and their makers. The 2nd section describes the development of what was a very uncertain industry and the rivalries of the various glass manufactories, whose owners were apparently not bound by such stringent libel laws as we have today; and covers briefly the composition and manufacture of looking-glass plates in the process of grinding, polishing, diamonding and foiling.
