About This Item

London: Printed for G.G. and J. Robinson, 1797. First edition. 8vo. xii, 481, (1) pp. With the half-title and errata leaf. Godwin (1756-1836), "known as the philosophical representative of English radicalism," following his publication of Political Justice in 1793 (DNB), published The Enquirer, the same year his wife Mary Wollstonecraft died following the birth of their daughter Mary (later Mrs. Shelley). Presented here are a "collection of diverse essays in which some of the themes of his Political Justice are analyzed less formally, resulting in some modification of his philosophical position with respect to equality" (Routledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy). Goldsmith 16911. Kress B337. Recent brown quarter-morocco and marbled boards, leather label, gilt rules, and raised spine bands. Very good copy in an attractive new binding. (1347).
