Second Edition. Blackwell took the degree of M.A. at Marischal College in the University of Aberdeen at the age of seventeen, and in 1723 was presented to the professorship of Greek there. He held this position and also that of principal of the college from 1748, until his death in 1757. He was held in high estimation by Bishop Berkeley who selected him as a professor in the projected college at Bermuda. The present work, first published in 1735, "was considered a remarkable book at the time, and opinions on its merits have varied considerably. Gibbon, without any explanation of his assertion, speaks of it as ‘by Blackwell of Aberdeen, or rather by Bishop Berkeley, a fine, though sometimes fanciful, effort of genius!’".. Hardcover.
