Two volumes bound as one, Jeremy Collier was an English theatre critic, non-juror bishop and theologian. His essays were popular to a contemporary audience. He wrote anti-theatrical polemic but was a high-church monarchist. This genre of writing was typically undertaken by Puritans at the time who were vehemently against theatre. With publisher's adverts between volumes I and II. This work comprises of essays on various subjects including the weakness of human reason, duelling, music, friendship, kindness and morality. ESTC no R30268. In a full calf binding. Externally, generally smart with patches of light rubbing to the extremities. Loss to the head and tail of spine, which has some small patches of rubbing. Front joint is cracked. Rear joint has small crack to the head of spine. Front hinge is strained but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned. Scattered spots to the first and last few pages, otherwise, just the odd spots. Good
