The Author has Signed with a lengthy inscription on the ffep. Also included is a 3 sided ALS on American Museum of Natural History letterhead. Gratacap was a Geologist, Naturalist, and Museum Curator, who also wrote of topics considered Sci Fi. Here he writes about Class, Wars, Religious bigotry, and the Present War(WW 1). All books bubble wrapped and shipped promptly in a box.

Modest rubbing, edge and corner wear - slightly more pronounced at the extremeties. Small 1/4 inch hole in cloth 3/4 inch up from heel at the gutter, front edge. Clean within, hinges secure though endpapers have parted and threads show. Page edges darkened. A very solid quite nice copy of an unusually uncommon science-fiction/speculative fiction work from the early 20th century. Protected in a clear wrap-around, photo available at request of serious buyer. .

An early fantasy/disaster novel in which the completion of the Panama Canal caused Central America to sink and the Atlantic ocean to flood westward and prompting an evacuation of England. This novel was one of the earliest examples of enviormental apocalyptic tales (such as Wells' "The Star" and Conal Doyle's "The Poison Belt") that evolved in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
