About This Item
London: John Murray, 1895. First edition. 8vo, 471pp. Frontis, illustrations, one folding. Maroon cloth with gilt illustration and lettering, recased with new endpapers. Boards rubbed at corners and spine ends, with scuffing to heel. Gilt a bit dulled on the spine. Former seller's annotations to endpapers, repaired horizontal tear to half title, small puncture to pgs. 353-354 with no loss of text. Very good.
First edition of Frederick Elworthy's (1830-1907) comprehensive work on the supernatural curse known as the evil eye. The book explores the superstition and folklore surrounding the affliction through many cultures from ancient times to the late 19th century. Elworthy gathered materials and stories for his research during travels to Spain, Italy, and elsewhere, and gathered a large collection of charms and amulets which are also described and depicted in the book.
This work has been reprinted several times, but the first edition remains scarce in the trade.
