About This Item

Paris: Benjamin Duprat, 1842. 8vo, pp. xiii, [1], 269, [1]; folding facsimile of a letter by Julien; recent orange cloth, gilt title on spine, original printed wrappers bound in; slightly later owner's signature on title and half-title, very faint underlining on a few pages, a couple pages foxed, else clean and sound, very good. "Along with Sebastien Couvreur and among 19th-century scholars of China, Julien's academic reputation was rivaled only by the Scottish sinologist James Legge, and no sinologist equaled his academic reputation until Édouard Chavannes at the turn of the 20th century." (Wikipedia) He was also unpopular among his peers on account of his personality, illustrated by the frontispiece in this work, in which he declares Pauthier ignorant of Chinese.
