About This Item

San Francisco: Falcon Entertainment and Brentwood, 1976-82. A fine collection of mid-70s to early 80s gay film flyers and catalogs. There are seven original envelopes containing 32 flyers and catalogs plus one larger catalog from the video department of Chicago's gay Bijou Theatre (ca. 1982 with 109 pp. advertising "over 600 gay male video tapes"). The inserts (folded and very well illustrated from photographs, almost all in color) advertise either gay porn stars or their movies. Presumably one could order these films but we see no ordering forms (other than in the Bijou catalog). Today these barely lift an eyebrow but in 1977 they were considered almost illegal. Filled with highly detailed pornographic gay photographic images. Very good condition. Falcon Entertainment (also known as Falcon Studios), a United States company based in San Francisco, California, is one of the world's largest producers of gay pornography. Founded in 1971 by Chuck Holmes, the company is one of the most recognizable brand names in gay pornography. Gay stars such as Steven Scarborough, John Rutherford, Chi Chi LaRue, amd Bruce Cam all did work for Falcon. Prior to 2004 the Falcon Family of Companies was owned by parent company Conwest Resources Inc.. Conwest was, in turn, was owned by the Charles M. Holmes Foundation, a charitable foundation based in Portland, Oregon. The foundation supports a wide range of organizations, including groups protecting lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender rights, organizations which provide support to people living with HIV/AIDS, and others that help homeless youth or fight pediatric cancer and autism. In 2004, the company's management bought Falcon from Conwest through 3Media Corp., a company that was formed by Falcon executives Terry Mahaffey and Todd Montgomery. 3Media eventually assumed the Conwest name. The buyout was arranged in order to separate the business from the Charles M. Holmes Foundation, which continues to function as a nonprofit organization. Brentwood Films was created in the early 70s in San Francisco by Matt Sterling. Both Holmes of Falcon and Sterling of Brentwood used John Travis as cameraman. But the two companies were very different in their styles with Brentwood movies striving to be like one-act plays and the Falcon Films pursuing pure sexual action. One of Brentwood's most notable films was "The Paperboy and Mr. Egan" and that film is advertised in Volume of of the Collector's edition offered here. Matt Sterling wanted his films to be more mainstream and content-based where Falcon was more directed toward the purely lewd. OCLC has none of the Brentwood publications. A few Starline (a play on the owner's name) pamphlets are included as they were a subsidiary of Brentwood. Much as "video killed the radio stars" so "internet killed the video stars", making these vintage catalogs harder and harder to find.
