New York: The Dial Press, 1963. First US Edition/First Printing. Hardcover. Good/Poor. In ivory cloth with red to type on spine and facsimile signature on front board. Top page ends tinted red. A little soiling to edges of boards and small stain to bottom of rear board with a few spot stains to front page ends as well. Corners a little softened and rubbed. Interior clean and binding solid. Jacket is unclipped ($3.50) with large chips at spine ends and lesser at corners and top of front panel numerous edge tears and creasing as well with scuffing to panels and rubbing /lightening to rear panel at bottom half due to sticker removal. Some moisture stains to inside of jacket at spine and a few punctures.

Synopsis

The Fire Next Time is a book by James Baldwin. It contains two essays: "My Dungeon Shook - Letter to my Nephew on the One-Hundredth Anniversary of Emancipation", and "Down At The Cross - Letter from a Region of My Mind". The first of these is written as a letter to Baldwin's 14-year-old nephew, discussing the central role of race in American history. The second essay deals with the relations between race and religion, focusing in particular on Baldwin's experiences with the Christian church as a youth, as well as the Islamic ideas of others in Harlem. Both essays had been previously published in The Progressive and The New Yorker before being published in book form.
