About This Item

New York: Rinehart, 1959. Hardcover. Fine/very good. Hardcover. 280 pp. with passenger list and crew list. Illustrated with photos. Fine in very good, price clipped dust jacket with modest wear at the spine ends. Laid in are a first day cover from the 75th anniversary of the wreck as a folded facsimile of the ship's dinner menu from June 1934. The SS Morro Castle (named after the 16th century fortress that guarded Havana harbor and first launched in 1930) was an American passenger liner that caught fire at sea and ran aground off Asbury Park, New Jersey on September 8, 1934. The previous night, the ship's captain, Robert Willmot, had suddenly died in his cabin and replaced in command by Chiel Officer William Warms. Just before three in the morning, a fire broke out in a storage locker; the fire quickly burned through the electical cables, plunging the ship into darkness, and quickly spreading through the ship. The response of the crew was slow, as was the launching of rescue ships by the Coast Guard and the crippled ship drifted toward Long Beach Island, eventually grounding in shallow water off Asbury Park. 137 passengers and crew were lost.
