About This Item
Reading, PA: Handy Book Company literally translated with explanatory notes by J.S. Watson Very unusual publication information: 1. The front cover has stamped in black at the top, "Handy Literal Translations" and at the bottom Hinds, Noble & Eldredge, New York City. 2. The book was printed with the publisher Hinds, Noble & Eldredge, Publishers (New York City) and above that is stamped Handy Book Company, Reading, Penna "publisher's of all translations formerly of (Hinds, etc.) We've never seen a successor publisher handle things in quite this way. There is no publication date in this volume, but it appears to be early 1900s. None of the other volumes we found by this publisher contained a publication date. That's unusual. Hinds, Noble & Eldredge was still publishing in 1905. Handy Book Company was incorporated in Pennsylvania in 1915(they could have been in business without being incorporated.) Based on that information we date this book to the early 1900s. Based on our experience, it looks more like a volume published in the 1800s. 16mo brown clothbound hardcover with with black titles on spine and cover; 145 pages followed by a several page catalog of publisher Handy's other volumes. Lovely endpapers with a light yellow floral print. The top half of the spine, extending onto the front cover is badly sunned. Black titles on spine are absent (top where it is sunned) or rubbed (beneath that.) Covers have some soil, notably front bottom corner. Head and heel of spine and corners are bumped. Penciled notation inside back cover. The top of page 31 has some publisher's blemishes, the bottom of page 74 has some ink transfer in an unprinted area. Pages 11 and 30 have creases to the inside margin. There is an ink spot on page 5 and some ink transfer to the bottom of page 11-13, 15-16. Tanned pages. We noted fingermarks on several pages, more than six creased page corners and one page with a small, light spot in the margin. . Cloth. Good/No Jacket. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall.
