Publisher's red cloth, spine lettered and ornamented in gilt, with ruling in black; boards ornately ornamented in gilt and black, with fillets in blind; all edges gilt; decorative endpapers; pp. [iv], 219; light rubbing to head and tail of spine, with fading to cloth; light marks to top of upper board; previous owner's inscription to front endpaper; some discolouration to half title and free endpapers; a little spotting throughout; a very good copy in the superbly decorated cloth binding. First edition. In the original Norwegian. En Folkefiende, or, 'An Enemy of the People,' is a five-act play, first published in 1882 and subsequently first performed in 1883. It concerns the actions of Doctor Thomas Stockmann, a medical officer charged with inspecting the public baths on which the prosperity of his native town depends. He finds the water to be contaminated. When he refuses to be silenced, he is declared an enemy of the people' (Britannica).
