First edition. Chapman and Hall. London. 1856. viii, 316pp. 16pp publisher's catalogue dated May 1st 1856 to end. Original cloth, blind tooled. Part of spine strip missing, requiring attention and renewing, as is often the case in this work, due to the fragility of the cloth used. (Price has been adjusted accordingly to allow for the work to be done professionally to the new owner's taste). Wear to boards. A little spotting to title page, generally bright, binding firm. White, who wrote many travel books, was one of the first to call attention to the eastern Alps. He describes climbing through the mountains led by a local guide.

London, Chapman and Hall,, 1856. First edition, 8vo. pp. viii, 316. Contemporary half calf over marbled boards, a little wear, headcap and part of the lettering pice on the spine neatly renewed. Inscription dated 1969 in red ink to verso of title-page. Walter White (1811-1893) trained as a cabinet maker in his father’s business, but for forty years served as a librarian at the Royal Society. He wrote a number of books based around his walking holidays, including erxpeditions to Mont Blanc, eastern Germany and Bohemia. Book
