Paris: Soyer, 1811. First edition. Cloth. Very Good. 8.5" by 5.5". Various. A complete two volume set by Aubin-Louis Millin which combines art history with archaeological works, with illustrated plates that make up half of the text. First edition, complete two volume set. Illustrations include almost two-hundred plates to the rear of both volumes, depicting a range of architectural and archaeological monuments. This is an informative work on various monuments and their importance within art history, archaeology, and mythology, written by Aubin-Louis Millin. These volumes detail almost eight-hundred specimens, including frescoes and bas-relief engravings, and their important within ancient civilisations and more modern times. Aubin-Louis Millin de Grandmaison (1759-1818) was an antiquary and curator of the Cabinet des medailles et antiques within the French royal library. He was briefly imprisoned during the French Revolution for his campaigns against the Jacobins, and reestablished the Bibliotheque nationale upon his release. With an illustrated bookplate to both volumes belonging to Lewis Andrew de la Chaumette. Errata page to rear of Vol II. Collated, complete. Bound with full-paper covered boards. Externally, generally smart. Rubbing and wear to the extremities and to the spines, particularly to the head of Vol I. Marks from fading to the boards of both volumes. Illustrated bookplate to front paste downs. Light spots and age-toning to paste downs and endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with light age-toning to margins of pages and the odd spot to the fore edge of text. Spotting increases to the first and last few pages, affecting a few of the pages of illustrated plates. Very Good
