About This Item
Gallus Or Roman Scenes of the Times of Augustus
London: John W. Parker 1844. FIRST ENGLISH LANGUAGE EDITION. Translated from the German of Professor Becker by Frederick Metcalfe, St John's College, Cambridge. lightly-scuffed book in magnificent condition, probably never read as marbled page edges sit perfectly flat. Inside front boards are the bookplate of Dr. Charles Collier F.R.S. and a prize plaque awarding the book (at Harrow School) to Robert Collier for excellence in History and Latin verse, dated 1846. Dr Charles Collier (c1784-1870) was a Fellow of The Royal Society. I assume from the date 1846 that Robert was the son of Charles. Eminently collectible. This is something I have not seen before: the date is on the tirle page in Roman numerals and ALSO at bottom of leather spine in our Arabic numerals. Spine is highly decorative with 7 gilt raised bands, 5 of the spaces between band with decorative incuse blind pattern, and title in 6th panel. Marbled page edges are like new. Marbled end pages like new 421 pages Full title...Augustus with notes and excursus illustrative of the manners and customs of the Romans, Graded VG but an undoubted FINE for the date. No dust jacket as issued. full leather 5-ribbed spine enclosing decorative designs and at bottom date 1844 in the learher. marbled end pages and page edges
