About This Item
(Subject: Colonial & Other Wars ) Living in exile following a failed insurrection in Piedmont in 1834, news of the outbreak of revolution in Palermo in January 1848 and agitation elsewhere in Italy encouraged Garibaldi to lead some sixty members of the Italian legion home. He returned to Italy and offered his services to Charles Albert of Sardinia. Rebuffed, he and his followers crossed into Lombardy where they offered assistance to the provisional government of Milan. Garibaldi took up the command of the defence of Rome but the city fell on June 30, 1849 and Garibaldi was forced to flee to the north.
