About This Item

Philadelphia: D. Heartt, 1818. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Thick octavo. 4.5 x 7.5 in. viii, 312, 254, 10 +[4] pp. Near fine in polished calf over marbled boards, rubbing to board extremities and slight wear line on leather spine where two volumes meet in text. Overall text is tight, free of marks and binding square. At the time of publication, Nuttall was a fellow at the American Philosophical Society and of the Academy of Natural Sciences (Philadelphia). The preface politely asks understanding for the omittance of the lower orders of Cryptogamia as well as a skim use of nomenclature in order to offer a "portable manual for the student." New names and genera proposed by the author are noted with an asterix while obscure species receive a plus sign. Some 834 species are discussed in this two-volumes-in-one book.

About Cleveland Book Company

We are proud members of the ABAA.

As a small, independent bookseller in Cleveland, Ohio, I deal in general used, rare, and antiquarian books, autographs, manuscripts, pamphlets, and personal and family papers in all subjects. My family has been in the antiquarian book business since 1971. Are you moving, downsizing, or doing some spring cleaning? Did you inherit or otherwise come into some old books? Or, maybe you've collected modern novels from the last thirty or fifty years. No matter what kinds of books you have, we'd love to take a look at them! We travel throughout Ohio, western Pennsylvania and New York, southern Michigan, and eastern Indiana, and will travel farther in some cases to look at whole libraries or even just a few particularly interesting books. Give us a call at (216) 352-3940 and we can talk more about the kinds of books you have.
