About This Item

London: Tinsley Brothers,, 1872. First edition in book form, in a variant publisher's binding that does not conform exactly to Sadleir's description of the primary and secondary bindings. The frame device stamped on the covers is in blind, not black, and the spine is not ruled. The Golden Lion of Granpere is "not only Trollope's best shorter book, but one of the most charming idylls in English literature" (Walpole in Gerould). Octavo. Original brown pebble-grain cloth, titles in gilt to spine, decorative borders in blind to boards, pale yellow endpapers. Faint W.H. Smith circulating library embossed stamp to front free endpaper. A hint of wear to extremities, pp. 31 and 159 carelessly opened with marginal loss, internally fresh; a near-fine copy. Winifred Gregory Gerould, Guide to Trollope, 1948, p. 96; Sadleir, Trollope 38.

Synopsis

Up among the Vosges mountains in Lorraine, but just outside the old half-de province of Alsace, about thirty miles distant from the new and thoroughly fr baths of Plombieres, there lies the village of Granpere. Whatever may be said or thought here in England of the late imperial rule in France, it must at any rate be admitted that good roads were made under the Empire. Alsace, which twenty years ago seems to have been somewhat behindhand in this respect, received her full share of Napoleon's attention, and Granpere is now placed on an excellent road which runs from the town of Remiremont on one line of railway, to Colmar on another.
