Printers device on title and 21 charming woodcuts of birds, animals, trees etc, including one of a surgical operation, woodcut initials, 2 columns. Extremely scarce in commerce and not easy to find in libraries, either. Condition is good antiquarian. Modern cream cloth boards with normal shelf wear, what appears to be an older leather spine label. Interior end pages renewed with the book plate of Eric Gerald Stanley, the great Oxonian medieval scholar. Title page is remounted and repaired with some losses, including to text, some old ownership marks. The first few pages are remounted or repaired at the gutter, some dampstains mostly in the margins except at the back where the last 30 leaves show tide marks, occasional worming sometimes affecting text, paper trimmed occasionally affecting headers, text is otherwise clean, binding is sound. A nice copy of a quite scarce book. Bartholomaeus was also known as Bartholomew the Englishman or Bertholomew de Glanville. Born in Suffolk, England, he was an English friar who studied the natural sciences and theology at Oxford University, under the direction of Robert Grosseteste. Bartholomaeus went on to the University of Paris, where he taught theology. In 1224 or 1225, with fellow theology professor Haymo of Faversham, he joined the newly organized Franciscan order in Paris. Bartholomeus's encyclopedic work, translated here into French for the first time, focused on the knowledge of all sciences of his time. It consists of 19 books organizing the subjects of astronomy, botany, chronology, geography, medicine, mineralogy, philosophy, theology and zoology. It is considered by many to be the first important encyclopedia of the Middle Ages. De proprietaribus rerum was the first to combine the works of Arabian, Greek and Jewish physicians and naturalists into one reference work. Bartholomaeus cited the works of Aristotle, Isaac Medicus, Hippocrates, Theophrastus and the Arabian, Haly. It provides an understanding of numerous aspects of life in twelfth and thirteenth century Europe and was used for centuries as a reference by scholars and writers such as Shakespeare.
