About This Item

New York:: Harcourt, Brace & Company, 1994.. 1st Printing, this edition.. Hardbound . BINDING/CONDITION: turquoise binding with lighter turquoise cloth at the spine; a Very Good book, with a Very Good dust jacket; publisher's price on the jacket flap is intact.. 4to (12.25 inches tall) . Illustrated endpapers. Description: This story by James Thurber was originally published in 1944.; these fresh illustrations by Steven Kellogg are an excellent match. Hunder is a terrible giant, occupying towns until he impoverishes the population and moving on. The next town in his path is a tranquil village where Quillow the toymaker lives. Although he is not an official member of the town council (after all, he's only a toymaker!), Quillow attends the meetings, thus is present when the demands of the giant are read out to the council. Quillow has an idea, but keeps quiet about it for a time until he has prepared the way. He then convinces the villagers to try his ideas for outsmarting a giant.

Synopsis

This contemporary fairy tale by one of America’s best-loved authors brings style and humor to the familiar folk theme of overcoming brute strength with intelligence and courage. “The artwork captures the bustle and the bickering of the story as well as the terror and the wonder. A fine choice to read aloud, even to children who could read it to themselves.”-Booklist
