About This Item
New York: John Dainty & American News Co., 1867. First edition. Hardcover. Very good condition. A guide to NYC and the Hudson River and upstate NY. The contents include Blackwell's Island, Bellevue Hospital, Central Park, Columbia Univ. College of Physicians, Cooper Institute, Ferry Boats, Steamboats, Five Points House of Industry and Mission House, Greenwood Cemetery, High Bridge, Howard Mission, various asylums and hospitals (Colored Home & Orphans Asylum, Leaks & Watts', Magdalen, Widow's, Juvenile, Insane, Roman Catholic) Bellevue, Jews' & St. Luke's Hospital, NY Historical Society, NYU, Libraries, Randall's Island, Railroads, Ward's Island. The Hudson River section has its own title page (page 107). Most of the engraved plates feature views on the Hudson. Pagination includes advertisements, all with wonderful typefaces, some engraved on thicker paper and some with engraved illustration.
OCLC: 898571687 records 1 copy at NYHS but records their copy as imperfect: lacks p. 7-13, 137-138. Our copy paginates with the Historical Society with a gap at pages 7 - 13, likely a printers error as there is no indication that anything is missing. This copy does include page 137 which features a wonderful advertisement and engraving of Barnum's New American Museum.
12mo, advertisements for NY businesses on orange endpapers numbered 2-6, one folding; 165p, 12 unnumbered leaves of steel engraved plates and 1 large folding map of Manhattan with the Hudson River map printed in the outer edge. Bound in publishers brown cloth covers with title in gold on the cover. Binding lower outside corners rubbed, slt. marking front board, no text on spine, which is slightly sunned. Overall, in very good condition, including the map, folded and printed on onionskin paper.
A super copy of an item rare in the trade.
