London: John W. Parker. Very Good- with no dust jacket. 1848. First Edition. Hardcover. Some rubbing to spine and boards. 14mm chip to cloth at head of front joint. Narrow splits to gutters at hinges. Damp stain to upper margin of front endpaper. Owner's signature on title page "William Campbell". Later owner has added author's name to title page. ; This copy has a piece of paper with two printed notices regarding the Canterbury Association pasted to the front endpaper, the notices are both dated Jan 12, 1850, the first with address 41 Charing Cross and the second with address 1 A Adelphi Terrace. viii, 493, [1 (blank)] pages + [2] pages advertisements "Books Suitable for Emigrants". Original blind-stamped green cloth boards with gilt lettering on spine. Page dimensions: 166 x 104mm. This work by E. J. Wakefield was published anonymously as by "A Late Magistrate of the Colony. Who Resided There During Four Years." [Bibliographical reference: Bagnall 5823 - "A blend of European discovery and occupation, description of existing settlements and advice to intending immigrants. Although written in the excitement of Canterbury's conception, and despite the compiler's obvious prejudices the work is more than a statistical apologia for the New Zealand Company [. . .]"] .
