DJ has shelf-wear, rubbing present to the DJ especially around the extremities (chips and missing pieces present to the extremities of the DJ). Bound in navy blue cloth with gilt titles present to the spine and the front board. Boards have light wear present to the extremities of the boards (boards are lightly scuffed and worn at the spine ends). No ownership marks present. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. 'Handicrafts of the Southern Highlands' is the only comprehensive book ever written on the crafts of Southern Appalachia. It contains a wealth of information on every aspect...log-cabin building; spinning and weaving out of cotton, wool and flax; types of looms used; names of weaving patterns; weaving drafts; natural dyes, patchwork and other kinds of quiltmaking; pottery, furniture making; making toys and dolls; musical instruments and mountain music; and much more. Doris Ulmann was an American photographer, best known for her dignified portraits of the people of Appalachia, particularly craftsmen and musicians. In 1932 Ulmann began her most important series, assembling documentation of Appalachian folk arts and crafts for Allen Eaton's landmark 1937 book, Handicrafts of the Southern Highlands.
