Frontispiece + xlviii + 372; frontispiece + xv + flyleaf of errata + 419; plus a total of 12 color plates, 194 plates, three folding maps and one folding panorama –with two views-, plus the two aforementioned frontispieces. Original blue cloth, front covers the metallic silver portrait of the Farthest South holding the Union Jack, spines flat and lettered, small losses and slightly worn, restored. Fine copy as often, very fresh and clean. First edition –the trade issue- of the Nimrod expedition; this is one of the most significant and celebrated expeditions made by the British to the Antarctic. The work was elegantly printed and profusely illustrated with the photographs taken during the mission. Shackleton was short of bankrupt after the expedition; even the great and almost immediate success that followed the publication of the book did little for his problems. Spence, 1097.

Description:
San Francisco:: Pettingell Book Bindery / Art Hazelwood,, 2010.. Edition of 10. 16 x 18"; 72 pages. Sixty woodcuts printed by the artist on Masa paper in editions varying in size from 25 to 50 of which numbers 11 - 20 were bound by the artist in a hand-sewn hardcover book format. Prints tipped onto Arches cover text paper. Each print numbered, titled, and signed. Art Hazelwood: "From 1986 to 1993 I traveled around the world, living in Europe and Asia and in various parts of the States. My primary interest however was traveling in Asia. The intensity of travel lured me on to see more and more. Experiences of people and places left their mark and I have tried to give back some of that feeling. The Tibetan nomads, Vietnamese 'cyclo' drivers, Japanese 'salary man,' Sikhs, Thais, and Uygurs that make up this series are the actors on an impossibly crowded world stage. It is this sometimes overwhelming encounter with the world that these prints seek to express. "Prints… Read More

Bruxelles: Librairie historique-artistique, 1843. First edition. 4 large in-8 volumes, (270 mm x 170 mm). Midnight blue half-sheepskin binding, embossed percaline covers, spines have gilt titles and decoration. Illustrated with hand coloured / hand finished engraved plates. These were created by the leading illustrators of the time, including Duverger, L. Markaert, R. King. The bindings are in very good condition, with a little rubbing to the edges only. Inside, the text and plates have light foxing throughout, but are overall in very good condition. Each copy online offers a different number of plates for each of the four volumes - but our copy seems to match the maximum collation for each variation (so seems complete.) The index is of limited use, as it only lists a proportion of the plates. In addition to the four title vignettes, we have: Europe (1844). 364 pages, 49 plates; Asie (1845). 592 pages, 82 plates; L'Afrique et l'Amérique (1844), 368 pages, 43 plates; l'Océanie (1845) 368 pages… Read More

Description:
1796 Nootka Crisis John Meares Voyages CHINA British Columbia SEA MONSTERS 3v
John Meares was an 18th-centry Irish explorer who was a notable fur trader with the East India Company. He based many of is voyages and ship out of European colonies in China. His most infamous voyage began in 1788 when he left China with two unregistered ships sailing the Portuguese flag each headed to the Nootka Sound in British Columbia. His arrival began what would be called the 'Nootka Crisis' – a political dispute between Spain, America, and England over local tribes and land.
The details of the event, from Meares perspective, were written in 'Voyages from China to the Northwest Coast of America'. This 1796 Italian edition was published in Naples and features absolutely stunning engravings, including views of sea monsters and ships!

Description:
London: William Heinemann,, 1909. With the elusive dust jackets First trade edition, first impression, with the scarce dust jackets remarkably well-preserved. Shackleton's account of the British Antarctic Expedition of 1907-9 (Nimrod) was reviewed on publication by the Manchester Guardian as "the best book of polar travel which has ever been written". The sledge expedition to the south magnetic pole "was one of the three foremost achievements of this expedition. The other two achievements were, first, the ascent and survey of Mount Erebus (12,448 feet), the active volcano on Ross Island and, second, the southern sledge journey, which reached within 100 miles of the south pole" (ODNB). In September 1908 David, MacKay, and Mawson set out for the magnetic pole. The group was weighed down by two sledges carrying heavy equipment and provisions that were man-hauled in relay. Both David and Mawson fell into a crevasse on the journey out and only narrowly escaped death. They reached the magnetic pole in… Read More

Description:
Indianapolis: Dog Ear Publishing, January 2013. Trade Paperback. Fine. Slight reading wear to corners, otherwise pristine. Not from a library. No remainder mark. Not clipped. Not damaged. Suitable for gifting. 163 pages. The 25 authors of this book were volunteers in the first Peace Corps rural community development project in Africa: Sierra Leone, 1965-67. They are also the first group to tell a collective story of Peace Corps volunteers, anywhere. The Peace Corps was in its infancy then, and memories of John Kennedy were strong among the young volunteers. Sierra Leone was also in its infancy in the first few years after independence, before military coups and tribal warfare became common. The authors forthrightly recount their feelings of loneliness and isolation, and their frightening experiences with secret societies and witchcraft, but their uniquely optimistic "can-do" American attitude brought most through a great life experience.

London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme & Brown, 1823. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. pp: [viii]ix-xii [1]2-544. FIRST EDITION. Bound in brown half-leather over marbled boards, title in gilt within a red title piece. The first edition of the author's first book. William Wilson (1772-1849) inherited a substantial sum from an uncle, and decided to indulge his passion for travel. He travelled throughout Europe and The Middle East and wrote a series of books. This was his first, and it was the most popular, going through several editions. This is a good copy as all plates, including the frontispiece, have been excised. The boards show moderate wear, heavier at the spine ends. The front hinge is cracked. The text block is mainly clean with a few marks of unknown origin.
