About This Item

Bernard Quaritch, London, first edition, November 1886. Limited edition of 150 demy 8vo copies from a total edition of 180. Quarter-leather and pebblegrain cloth, 8vo, 22 cm,. xv, 191 pp, facs. A valuable catalogue with detailed descriptions by the author of 'Bibliographia liturgica'. From the author's preface: "The larger portion [of this catalogue] is devoted to a careful description of the most important liturgical manuscripts and of all the printed liturgical books exhibited. ... The notice of each book, generally based on the collation of several copies, is followed by a description of the copy or copies exhibited, and a chronological list of the works in which the book is noticed, those which merely repeat previous descriptions being placed within brackets. The two last sections of the Catalogue contain the treatises on music, manuscript and printed, and such of the collections of sacred and secular music as I was able to take notes of before the dispersal of the Collection." The last section includes among others descriptions of "the choral service-books belonging to divers colleges at Cambridge and to Durham Cathedral (Part V., Nos. I, 2, 3, and 6-11)" by Mr. Owen Dullea. Bookplate on front pastedown endpaper of Alfred James Hipkins FSA (1826-1903) English musician, musicologist and musical antiquary. (Hipkins had contributed the preface to the official 1885 "Guide to the Loan Exhibition" - a bald listing carelessly drawn up "apparently by a clerk" - that made Bernard Quaritch so "indignant at the neglect of the Committee" that he commissioned Weale to produce this 1886 careful and detailed catalogue of the books and manuscripts.) Piece lost from head of spine, leather powdering at foot of spine, covers rubbed and worn, contents Good with a few marks. Publisher's printed slip giving the limitation laid in.
