"The presence or absence of commas separating the Roman numerals in the imprint date and stop-press alterations (see Errata, p.574) in the text of a number of sheets have led past bibliographers to speak of the several states of this volume. A collation of the changes in copies examined indicates that the binder followed no consistent pattern in grouping together corrected and uncorrected sheets"--Miller. The first general history of New Jersey and still a useful source for the colonial period. James Parker was Franklin's New York printing partner, and correspondence between the two relating to the printing of this work survives (see Papers, Vol. 12). Parker moved temporarily to Burlington, leaving his Woodbridge printing office under his son's supervision, specifically to print Smith's history.
