About This Item

New York: D. & J. Sadlier & Co., 1869. Irish patriot John Mitchel (1815-1875), after his escape from Tasmania to America, continued the 18th-century history of Ireland by the Abbe James MacGeoghegan. This is a Very Good copy of what Quercus believes is a Later Printing of the First Edition published by Sadlier. (The precedence of the various Sadlier editions is somewhat unclear, particularly since some were undated; but Quercus has seen a copy from a year earlier, and 1868 is the oldest in WorldCat.) Despite its popularity in the 19th Century, good copies are rather scarce. Brown pebbled cloth (possibly originally maroon in color) with gilt lettering on the spine; now faded. Mildly bumped and rubbed at head and foot of spine. Clean text; 629 pages, indexed. This is an ex-libris copy, but the treatments are minimal: numbering on the foot of the spine and pencil numbering on the reverse of the Title Page. No pockets or stampings. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Later Printing.. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket.
