44 pages. Octavo (8 1/4" x 6") issued in wrappers. From the library of Professor George M Foster.Biblioteca Aportacion Historica. Limited to 100 copies of which this is number 55.Gerónimo de Aguilar, O.F.M. (1489-1531) was a Franciscan friar born in Écija, Spain. In 1511 Aguilar left Panama on a caravel sailing to Santo Domingo, accompanying the procurator Juan de Valdivia. They were shipwrecked near the Yucatán Peninsula due to bad weather, but Aguilar, along with a sailor from Palos, in Spain, Gonzalo Guerrero, were two of fifteen survivors. Strong currents brought them in their ship's boat to the coast of the modern-day Mexican state of Quintana Roo. Aguilar and the others were captured by the local Maya and scheduled to be sacrificed to Maya gods. He and Gonzalo Guerrero eventually managed to escape later to be taken as a slave by another Mayan chief named Xamanzana.[1] Here he and Guerrero were able to learn the language of their captors. Aguilar lived as a slave during his eight years with…

44 pages. Octavo (8" x 6") issued in wrappers. Edited by Jose Fernando Ramirez. From the library of professor George M Foster. Biblioteca Aportacion Historica, second series. First edition limited to 100 copies of which this is number 57.With the fourth supply caravan, which left Mexico City in 1620 and arrived in New Mexico early in 1621, came fray Gerónimo Zárate Salmerón. Like all of the 250 or so Franciscans sent to New Mexico during the seventeenth century, Zárate Salmerón was not born in the province, although he was a native of the New World. His birthplace was Río Alvarado, south of Veracruz on the Gulf of Mexico coast, where he was born probably in the middle 1550s. The decade of his birth is inferred from the year of his profession as a priest at the Franciscan Convento Grande in Mexico City, 1579, and the usual minimum age of a new priest of 25. Fray Gerónimo was assigned as priest to the people of Jemez. He got to work almost immediately, founding the mission San José de…

Manuscript material from the collection of Joaquin Garcia Icazbalecta. 1st edition.Luis Garcia Pimentel took over his father collection upon his death. How many volumes of manuscripts his library contained cannot be said with any degree of certainty. All we know is that at the end of his life his library was one of the finest and richest of private collection in Mexico. A typewritten list prepared in 1937 by his grandson, Juoaquin, shows that the collection contained at least eighty-seven volumes of manuscripts, only sixty-nine of which were listed by Federico Gomez de Orozco in his catalog in 1927. His son Garcia Pimentel picked up where his father left off, and continued publishing material from the collection. He began anther series of volumes Documentos Historicos de Mejico of which this is volume II in the series on the relationships between the bishoprics of Tlaxcala,…

Colecci de estudios historico-economicos mexicanos de la cara Nacional de la Industria de Transformaci, 1. Limited to 750 copies. First edition. The guilds were corporate estates, hierarchical patterns according to medieval craft guilds organized incumbent on a patron saint. The latter group was subject to an ordinance issued by the Cabildo of Mexico City and confirmed by the Viceroy. One judge was in charge of monitoring compliance with the provisions of the Ordinances. Within the profession there was a strict distinction between the categories of officers, trainees and teachers. The control that the ordinances imposed on the guilds caused a stagnation in production and that prevented any craftsman doing his trade, outside the guild. xvi+469 pages with appendix and bibliography. Royal octavo (9" x 6") bound in original publisher's brown cloth with gilt lettering to spine in original pictorial jacket. First editionFocusing on the fate of the natives under Spanish rule, the author traces in graphic detail the rupturing of Indian traditions and the fate that befell the Indian people. While demonstrating the excesses of the conquistadors and unscrupulous crown officials, he also emphasizes that Central America was the scene of the first attempt to apply the famous New Laws. Although that legislation was not fully implemented, the reformist judge Alonso Lopez de Cerrato made significant improvements in labor conditions, in the face of furious opposition from the Spanish settlers. Aside from it discussion of labor practices, this account deals with population figures and the extent of the slave trade, and corrects a number of errors in traditional sources. In addition, Spanish Indian policy, particularly at the local level, is examined…
