About This Item
London: Allen & Unwin, 1946. First Edition. Hard Cover. Dust Jacket. First UK Edition. Publisher's original oatmeal cloth with brown and yellow stamped lettering panels to the spine. Base of spine slightly softened (due to the sheer size and weight of the book) otherwise a VG++ copy (with NO PREVIOUS OWNER'S INSCRIPTIONS and with just a touch of foxing to the page block edges (although a lot less than normally seen). The D/W is the correct first issue priced 21s net to the inside flap (as called for) which was printed on re-used war-time paper with a colour map printed on verso. The D/W has had NO REPAIRS OR RESTORATION TO THE VERSO; the extremities show a little chipping and creasing and a touch of fraying to the tip and tail of the spine (not affecting any lettering). The rear panel is nice and clean. A totally un-restored "honest" copy of this important survey of Western philosophy from pre-socratic philosophers to the early part of the 20th century. When the Author was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1950, this title was mentioned as one of the books that won him the award. A very clean copy. Photographs/scans available upon request.
