About This Item

First Listing in Bent's Bibliography

The first edition of one of the early classics about the White Mountains of New Hampshire, and accordingly, the first book listed in Bent's Bibliography of the White Mountains. Two ownership inscriptions in ink on ffep: "Mrs. Newcomb, White Mountain House, 28 July 1846." and "From Coll. of N.L. Goodrich, P. F.[?] Norton, 1957." (Nathaniel Goodrich was the head of the Dartmouth College Library from 1912 to 1950.) A very nice example of a cornerstone work for any collection of the history or literature of the White Mountains.

Reference: Hanrahan [ed.], Bent's Bibliography of the White Mountains: p. 1.
Condition: Embossed brown cloth with lightly faded areas. Bright gilt title on front board. Modest wear at head and tail of spine and tips of boards. Damp stain, progressively smaller, at upper tips of pages through page 50; occasional minor foxing thereafter. Overall, a very sound example.
