About This Item

Hyperion (first book of the Endymion Duology) by Dan Simmons First Edition - First Printing Doubleday, 1989. Winner of the Hugo Award and the Locus Award for Best Novel. Trade paperback first edition rebound into a hardcover. Please read ALL that follows below before buying this book! If you need further explanation please feel free to send me a message so you know what exactly you're buying. You're not buying the original trade hardcover as issued by Doubleday but something close to it.
This is a special example of Hyperion in which a first edition trade paperback had been rebound into a hardcover. Dark blue cloth material was used to create the covers and the title Hyperion, author Dan Simmons, and publisher Doubleday are embossed on the spine in a similar design to the original hardcover trade edition (without the Doubleday logo). A facsimile dust jacket made of glossy paper is present replicating as closely as possible the jacket of the original hardcover edition with artwork by Gary Ruddell, retaining the original cover price of the hardcover of $18.95. The book has red end papers and the original card-stock covers of the front and back of the trade paperback have also been bound in towards the front and back respectively. The original pages of the trade paperback make up the vast majority of the text-block. So far as I know the text-block (i.e. the pages) of the hardcover and trade paperback issues were identical with only 2000 copies being bound as hardcover copies and probably around 20,000 to 25,000 copies being the paperback. This is in part to give someone the opportunity to own a first edition of Hyperion as a hardcover without paying the typical $1500+ which the book fetches now.
Fine binding, Fine- text-block, in Fine facsimile dust jacket. The only shortcomings are nicks to the lower corners of the original card-stock covers, else fine. For the bargain-hunter or discerning collector! This is a unique item!
NOTE on edition: Hyperion was originally published in simultaneous hardcover and trade paperback issues in 1989 by Doubleday US. Reportedly only 2000 copies were issued in hardcover, the balance, probably something like 20,000 copies, were issued in trade paperback. Very early on, the hardcover sold out very quickly and became collectible particularly after winning the Hugo Award for Best Novel. It now appears to trade for $1500+ on the collectible book market. This is a unique opportunity to own a hardcover example of Simmons' novel without paying the hefty premium for the trade hardcover as issued by Doubleday.

NOTE: All modern books with dust jackets come with dust jacket covers.

Synopsis

It is the 29th century and the universe of the Human Hegemony is under threat. Invasion by the warlike Ousters looms, and the mysterious schemes of the secessionist AI TechnoCore bring chaos ever closer. On the eve of disaster, with the entire galaxy at war, seven pilgrims set fourth on a final voyage to the legendary Time Tombs on Hyperion, home to the Shrike, a lethal creature, part god and part killing machine, whose powers transcend the limits of time and space. The pilgrims have resolved to die before discovering anything less than the secrets of the universe itself.
