Early days in Allen County, IN, including the City of Fort Wayne, are recalled through colorful tales, factual data, and individual biographies in this 63 page booklet compiled from excerpts from two rare books: An Illustrated History of the State of Indiana (1875) by DeWitt C. Goodrich and Prof. Charles R. Tuttle, and Indiana, a Guide to the Hoosier State, a WPA publication from 1940. The 8 1/2" x 11" spiral bound booklet is printed on 60# paper. A vinyl sheet protects the front cover. Among the many subjects discussed are: Kekionga, capital city of the Algonquin Indians; Early history of forts and Indians in the area; the siege of Fort Wayne; Early Settlement of Fort Wayne; Early Settlement of Allen County; tales of early days; population growth by township; Railroads; the Bass Foundry and Machine Works. Brief biographies with pictures are included for: Robert Brackenridge, J.K. Edgerton, Pliney Hoagland, Charles A. Zollinger, J.D. Nuttman, John Hough, Samuel Hanna, Mrs. Eliza Hanna, Col. S.S. Bass, J.H. Bass, B. Trentman, S.C. Evans, N.G. Olds, O. Bird, A.P. Edgerton, Mrs. Laura Suttenfield, and J.L. Williams. The WPA excerpt gives a history of Fort Wayne and a small map and tour of the city, covers the McCulloch homestead, Swinney Park, Site of the First American Fort, Site of the Wyllys Massacre, Site of Fort Miami, and other points of interest. Outside the city, tours visit Besancon, Site of Little Turtle Village, Roanoke, etc. Illustrations include a sketch of Fort Wayne in 1812, General Anthony Wayne, Fort Wayne Aqueduct, a map of the Northwest Territory, residence of F.P.
