Original black cloth-backed orange boards, spine lettered in orange, colour-lithographic dust-wrapper designed by F D; pp. 319; a superb copy. Judith Gautier, daughter of the romantic 'orientalist' Théofile, was an oriental scholar focusing on China and Japan. This work, originally published in 1869 is a novel of ancient China recreating life and civilisation of Imperial China. Judith Gautier is often described as Wagners "muse" during Parsifal - as Mathilde Wesendonk is supposed to have been his muse during the creation of Tristan - it is certain that Judith Gautier and Wagner were close. Allegedly Wagner named his chaise-longue after her.
