About This Item
London: A & C Black, 1912. Book. Illus. by Mortimer Menpes 75 Full Page, Tissue Captioned Watercolors. Very Good. Decorative Cloth. 2nd Printing. 8 Vo. Publisher's decorative cloth with gilt peacocks and India design on the front coverand spine, same as the first edition. Pages 216 with index. Ms. Steel, who lived long and wrote often on India, comments on history of Rajputs and Moghuls, India's many religions, arts and crafts, architecture, status of women, and the mutiny of 1857 among other topics. Very readable, with an understandable colonial bias in the eyes of the reader a Century later. Inside, clean and tight, with a hint of foxing that does not affect the plates. Menpes, a noted Australian illustrator, evokes the India colors and scene beautifully, all plates clean. Inman 38..
