London: John Murray, 1847 . Leather. Good. 9" by 6.5". None. The first two volumes of the third edition of Henry Hallam's work of literary criticism, in full calf bindings. Volumes I and II only of the three volume first edition of this work, lacking only volume III.First published in 1837, Hallam's work begins with an introductory overview sketching the state of literature in Europe to the end of the fourteenth century. He references the extinction of ancient learning after the fall of the Roman empire, and the rise of Christianity. For each time period discussed, the work has separate chapters on literature, theology, science, speculative philosophy and jurisprudence. In full calf bindings. Spotting to boards. Significant loss to volume I volume number label, with volume II label lacking. Tail of front joint of volume I starting, with board holding firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages a touch age toned to perimeters, otherwise clean and bright. Good
