A fundamental account on the Philippines, Ladrones and the martyrdom of Sanvitores. 1686. Naples. In 4to (206 mm x 155mm). 1 [blank] + 11 ff. + portrait + 663 + 1 [blank]. Contemporary Italian vellum over boards, spine with raised bands and lettered in ink, gently soiled, generally fine. A very good copy, occasionally browned, minor toning to some leaves. First Italian edition, translated from the original Spanish (1683) by Ambrosio Ortiz. This is the official biography of Sanvitores, written in order to produce evidence for canonization. Sanvitores (1627 – 1672) was a Spanish Jesuit missionary, recognized as founder of the first Catholic Church in Guam (the land being donated by local Chief Kepuha) and for establishing the Spanish presence in the Mariana islands (Ladrones); he arrived in Mexico in 1660 and in 1662 journeyed from Acapulco to the Philippines where he remained for 6 years, when permission was finally obtained for his mission to the Ladrones islands in the North Pacific, renamed Marianas at this time in honor of Maria Anna of Austria. A life of Luis de Medina, one of his companions martyred in the Marianas in 1670 was compiled from documents supplied by Sanvitores. His life ended abruptly, being martyred on Guam in 1672. A fundamental work, containing one of first detailed accounts of the Marianas in the Pacific; much also included respecting the Philippines and Guatemala. Illustrated with a fine engraved plate by Pesche, shows the martyrdom of Father Sanvitores, woodcut device on last folio. Sabin, 26591.

The book, excerpts of which are translated here under the title Journeys to the Moon and Sun, consist in equal parts of sci fi, philosophical speculation, metaphysical drama, theological humor, and freak show satire. Description:
1781 1ed Captain James Cook Voyage Australia Zealand Hawaii Pacific MAP Rickman"Remember, the greater the opportunity, the fewer are those who see it." – James Cook James Cook was an 18th-century British explorer known for these three major world voyages. The third Pacific voyage, which began in 1776, took Cook and his crew around New Zealand and Hawaii. On this trip, Cook became well acquainted with the King of Hawaii, Kalani-opu'u. After spending time in the South Pacific, Cook also took his ship northward to the Aleutian Islands reaching to the Arctic Circle. Cook eventually died upon his return to Hawaii, after angering the King of Hawaii. According to Hill, who does not note this rare Dublin edition, states:"This anonymous journal, of Captain Cook's third voyage, was once believed to have been written by John Ledyard, who had actually made liberal use of Lieutenant Rickman's account; hence the confusion. This narrative anticipated the government's authorized account by two years. All the… Read More

Description:
Indianapolis: Dog Ear Publishing, January 2013. Trade Paperback. Fine. Slight reading wear to corners, otherwise pristine. Not from a library. No remainder mark. Not clipped. Not damaged. Suitable for gifting. 163 pages. The 25 authors of this book were volunteers in the first Peace Corps rural community development project in Africa: Sierra Leone, 1965-67. They are also the first group to tell a collective story of Peace Corps volunteers, anywhere. The Peace Corps was in its infancy then, and memories of John Kennedy were strong among the young volunteers. Sierra Leone was also in its infancy in the first few years after independence, before military coups and tribal warfare became common. The authors forthrightly recount their feelings of loneliness and isolation, and their frightening experiences with secret societies and witchcraft, but their uniquely optimistic "can-do" American attitude brought most through a great life experience.

London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme & Brown, 1823. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. pp: [viii]ix-xii [1]2-544. FIRST EDITION. Bound in brown half-leather over marbled boards, title in gilt within a red title piece. The first edition of the author's first book. William Wilson (1772-1849) inherited a substantial sum from an uncle, and decided to indulge his passion for travel. He travelled throughout Europe and The Middle East and wrote a series of books. This was his first, and it was the most popular, going through several editions. This is a good copy as all plates, including the frontispiece, have been excised. The boards show moderate wear, heavier at the spine ends. The front hinge is cracked. The text block is mainly clean with a few marks of unknown origin.
