In this Volume 6 Malone follows the sixty-five- year-old Jefferson from the end of his second presidential term, when he was succeeded by James Madison, through the accomplishments, friendships, and personal difficulties of his retirement at his beloved Monticello. The remaining 17 years of his life were a period in which the political man receded, and the family man and architect began. But in Virginia the years 1809 through 1826 were bad economic times for an ex-President who received no pension and a dependent daughter and grandchildren and he plunged deeper into debt. In 1819 he achieved one of the most memorable successes of his life: the chartering of the University of Virginia. The institution opened its doors six years later, after a long and struggle academic village he helped create was unique in architecture and educational philosophy. And so ends the monumental six volume biography for which Dumas Malone was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for History in 1975.
