About This Item

Just about indistinguishable from new and flat signed "With kind regards Reg Roy." Dust jacket has minor closed tears at back. Reg lived here in Victoria and was a friend with whom I had many chats. He undertook the task of preparing Private Fraser's journal for publication at the request of My. Fraser's daughter Deidre.

In 1906, at the age of 24, Donald Fraser emigrated from Scotland and in November 1914 enlisted as a private in the 31st (Alberta) Battalion as soon as that battalion was formed. Ten months later, the battalion was in France. brigaded with the 6th Infantry Brigade of the 2nd Canadian Division of the CEF. Donald was later transferred to the 6th Brigade Machine Gun Company. He participated in the famous battles. His account is lively and at times critical; it has maps of Ypres, St. Eloi, Hooge, Courcelette, Vimy, Fresnoy, and of the Flanders Line and the Western Front. Plus four photo plates (7 photos). He was evidently an educated man able to make keen observations and express himself in a highly readable fashion.

I can highly recommend this book. Although the book is close to new with no defects, the dust jacket has two small closed tears at back that do not obtrude and the usual ribs along the edges. See scans.

This book was given to me by Reg. I have another copy, signed by Deidre, that has loose inside a letter from Roy to Deidre and a reply from Deidre to Roy. I list it separately.
