About This Item

Unpaginated (ca. 120 pp.) photographically illustrated record of the anti-communist uprisings in Kerala, India in the late 1950s, with texts in Malayalam and English. Oblong 4to. Overall about good, with marginal dampstains, newsprint toned. Illus. stiff wraps. [768]

After the popular election of a communist government under the leadership of E. M. S. Namboodiripad in 1957 during the first elections of the Kerala Legislative Assembly, opposition parties comprised of wealthy property owners organized a "liberation struggle" to resist plans under development that would have re-distributed land and implemented educational reforms in the province. The present publication provides a vivid account of the effort, both in photographs and contemporary texts.
