Evanston: W. M. Carpenter, 1929. First edition. One of only 100 copies printed for private circulation. [Richards B83]. Includes the first book appearance of Kipling's "Speech on Behalf of the Old Boys" and the first appearance of several Kipling letters. A history of Kipling's prepatory school by Chicago manufacturer William Montelle Carpenter, whose collection of Kipling autograph manuscripts of stories and poems, original letters, drawings, corrected galley proofs, photographs, etc., were donated by his widow to the Library of Congress in 1941. Illustrated with photographs of a young Kipling, the school and environs, his Euclidean Geometry textbook with six pages of drawings and caricatures by Kipling, and more. 8vo vellum backed blue paper boards lettered in gilt on front and spine; 58 pages plus inserts and frontis; errata slip laid in. In original glassine and original blue paper-covered slipcase. Glassine worn along top edge. Fine in near fine slipcase. With a little over half of the copies presently in institutional collections, understandably scarce.
