He Held This Position Until 1983. On December 17, 1981, Bohdan Lewandowski, In Contact With The Deputy Prime Minister Of The Polish People's Republic, Mieczyslaw Rakowski , On The Initiative Of Richard Pipes , Advisor To The Us President, Met With Pope John Paul Ii In The Vatican. The Purpose Of The Meeting Was To Provide John Paul Ii And Western Politicians With Information About The Situation In Poland After The Introduction Of Martial Law . It Resulted In A Letter From John Paul Ii To Wojciech Jaruzelski Of December 18, 1981, In Which The Pope Appealed For "A Return To The Methods Of Peaceful Dialogue" And "Ending The Martial Law".
