Between the fall of the Roman Empire and the Renaissance the University of Salerno played an invaluable role in the history of medicine. The Italian school provided a forum for theoretical and practical medicine and for surgery, based not only on the study of ancient Greek and Latin texts, but on the examination of patients who were staying in the University hospital. In true secular spirit, the school was opened to all nations and all religions, combining its practices harmoniously with Arabic and Hebrew traditions. This combination of different cultures led to a wider medical knowledge. Students, women as well as men, had participated in a curriculum which fused philosophy, theology and law. A classic pocket manual on the influential School of Salerno and its teachings.
