Solid hardcover. ; French language. Quarter leather with five compartment spine, gilt spine lettering, marbled paper boards, and marbled endpapers. 3 pièces: 1. Du culte de Jésus-Christ comme fondement de la vie chrétienne; 2. Du culte de Jésus-Christ dans les Écritures; 3. Du culte de Jésus-Christ dans l'Église. "Cleric, preacher, journalist, proponent of a liberal version of catholicism; trained as a lawyer before turming to religion, being ordained in 1827; co-founder of ultramontanist and liberal newspaper "L'Avenir", 1830; in 1839 joined the Dominican order in Rome (and took the name of Dominique), and subsequently re-established the order in France; supported the Revolution of 1848 in opposition to the July Monarchy and co-founded newspaper "L'Ere Nouvelle"; mostly retired from public life after Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte's coup of December 1851; elected at the Académie Française in 1860" - British Museum. Lacordaire wrote these three letters in 1858, while in self-exile from the Paris of Napoleon III, and in charge of the military school of Sorèze, where he inculcated the duties of manliness and patriotism as well as religion.
