About This Item
Sacramento: G. H. Springer, 1874. First Edition. Good. One of the last volumes of California laws officially translated into Spanish, here by José Francisco Godoy, the most prolific of 19th century Mexican American writers. Godoy was born in Mexico in 1851. With his family, he moved to San Francisco in 1864, when his father took the position as Mexican Consul in that city. He became a naturalized US citizen in 1873, the same year he won the contract to be the official state of California translator. He wrote plays, perhaps the first mystery novel by a Latin American writer (Who Did It?, 1883), a travel guide to San Francisco, and other works.
