About This Item
New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1938. First edition of this classic work. Octavo, original cloth, cartographic endpapers. With a foreword and map drawings by Charles A. Lindbergh. With a lengthy autograph note entirely in the hand of Anne Morrow Lindbergh which reads, "From Marcel & Elise 'Love is to the soul what the would is to the body - an increase, an additional soul.' 'To love means to see, and seeing belongs to the order of grace. To see means to recover a being in his glory. To re-establish him in his order of origin, which is super-natural. Love is the Sacrament of the Real Presence.... (About caring for many people) Is is lying to have a soul for each soul as the bee-hive has a call for each bee?... (Charity) Without a certain indulgence toward Evil, a certain weakness for the sinner, you cannot love soul. Will Elise always be without this weakness which is charity? And you cannot be a Christian without charity whatever the quality of your faith & the degree of your purity. 'I feel that married love has nothing to do with sympathy. With sensuality, with passion, with friendship, or with love. It alone is adequate to itself & cannot be reduced to one or the other of these different feelings. It has its own nature, its particular essence & its unique mode which depends on the couple that it brings together.' Merry Christmas!" Near fine in a very good dust jacket. The note is in near fine condition.
