About This Item

Towne & Bacon, San Francisco, 1867. First Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Very Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. HARTE, BRET. The Lost Galleon and Other Tales, San Francisco, Towne & Bacon, 1867. 12mo, first edition, pp. 108, 1 (notes), green cloth boards with beveled edges and gilt mast and sail outlining title on front, label on free front endpaper identifying this as part of the Estelle Doheny Collection of American Literature. Doheny, wife of the oil baron played by Daniel Day Lewis in "There Will Be Blood," amassed a valuable collection that was dispersed in auctions after she died in 1988. Doheny acquired the book from Frederick W. Skiff, another voracious collector, based in Portland, Ore. His bookplate, an elaborate sporting pictorial, is on the front pastedown (see below). This plate was designed by W.H. Hopson and is a small gem of American graphic art. Frank Weitenkampf, in "American Graphic Art," called Hopson's bookplates "that combination of variety in treatment with dignity and restraint in expression which produces the happiest results in these marks of bibliophilic proprietorship" (p. 261, Macmillan 1924 revised edition). The Harte book is BAL 7242. Condition of this book: Very good with a spot at the top edge and light rubbing to the edges of the boards. A few marks internally. Size: 12mo. Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. All edges clean, neat and free of foxing. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilo. Category: Antiquarian & Rare; United States; 19th century; Poetry. Pictures of this item not already displayed here available upon request.
