Fine/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 11 pages. Rare Luis Gonzalez Palma collectible item. Inaugural Exhibition Catalog. The first and only edition. Published in a small and limited print run of 500 copies as a softcover original only. There is no ISBN. The Catalog is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Luis Gonzalez Palma: Small-size volume format. Pictorial softcovers, as issued. Photographs by Luis Gonzalez Palma. Introduction by David Travis, Curator of Photography at the Art Institute of Chicago, and one of the finest photography scholars of our time. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Published on the occasion of the exhibitions at the Schneider-Bluhm-Loeb Gallery from May 8 through June 12 and at the Art Institute of Chicago from April 18 through July 12, 1992. A lovely memento of two major events. The shows established the Guatemalan artist/photographer's reputation in the United States as a major contemporary figure. Luis Gonzalez Palma gained immediate, enormous, and well-deserved international recognition for portraits that are rich with the symbolism of indigenous myth and culture, Catholicism and humanity. The figures that inhabit Gonzalez Palma's mythic world (angels, devils, hybrid creatures, and enigmatic characters) transcend time and place, suggesting that mysticism and beauty are his ultimate subject matter. Regarded by the Nobel Laureate Gabriel Garcia Marquez as the finest Latin-American photographer of his generation, the great writer used "La Rosa" (duotone with oil varnish) for the DJ cover of his novel, "Of Love And Other Demons". Gonzalez Palma's photograph of a woman garlanded with a skull, toned and white flowers on her hair is a striking image that, by itself, captures what he is trying to say about the paradox of Latin America: A continent of ineffable beauty and unspeakable pain at the same time. An absolute must-have collectible, not just memorabilia, item for Luis Gonzalez Palma collectors. This title is now collectible. Published on the occasion of the exhibitions at the Schneider-Bluhm-Loeb Gallery and at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1992, the shows established the Guatemalan artist/photographer's reputation in the United States as a major contemporary figure. As far as we know, this is the only copy of the Exhibition Catalog available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: This is a Catalog, neither a monograph nor a full-fledged book. But as his very first publication in the United States, it is important for Gonzalez Palma completists. A rare copy thus. One of the finest Latin-American artist/photographers of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER LUIS GONZALEZ PALMA TITLES IN OUR CATALOG).
