About This Item

1930.. 1930.. Very good. - Sepia-toned magazine portrait, 3 inches high by 2-1/2 inches wide, mounted on a piece of cream-colored card, approximately 4-3/4 inches high by 3 inches wide. Signed in black ink on the mount below the portrait: "R. E. Coontz / Admiral, US Navy / Retired / 1930." The mount is lightly soiled. Very good.
The head-and-shoulders portrait shows the elderly admiral swimming in a slightly choppy sea.
Robert Edward Coontz [1864- 1935] was an admiral in the United States Navy. During the Spanish- American War Coontz and his ship the Charleston siezed control of Guam, then joined Admiral George Dewey's forces in the Philippines. He was Governor of Guam in 1912-13. In 1919 he was appointed Chief of Naval Operations. While wrestling with financial problems, new technologies, pressure from Congress and the naval fallout from the Teapot Dome scandal, Coontz established a unified United States Fleet and strengthened the CNO's position within the Navy Department.
